## Use the rules for the selected year

Study-loan repayment thresholds and formulas depend on the income year. The marginal repayment system introduced from 2025–26 changed how repayments are worked out. Earlier calculators can give a different answer because they use an older method.

Select a supported year before comparing results. The example on this page is generated from that year’s versioned rules.

## Repayment income can exceed taxable income

The ATO repayment-income test adds certain amounts to taxable income, including reportable super contributions, reportable fringe benefits, net investment losses and exempt foreign employment income.

Here, repayment income equals the calculated taxable income because those additions are excluded. If you have any of them, the salary-only estimate is not a complete calculation for your circumstances.

## Check your remaining debt

An income-based estimate needs enough outstanding debt for that repayment to be due. If you are close to paying the loan off, check your ATO loan account and any balance limit offered by the calculator.

This tool does not project loan indexation, voluntary repayments or a future debt balance. Extra payroll withholding during the year is also separate from the compulsory repayment assessed at tax time.
