## Keep the comparison consistent

Use the same financial year, hospital-cover setting and HELP setting for both salaries. If one offer includes super and another excludes it, convert the package to cash salary first.

The useful comparison is the difference between the two annual net results. Dividing that difference by the displayed number of pay periods gives an average change for your budget.

## Allow for when the raise starts

A new annual salary does not mean you receive that amount in the current financial year if the raise starts partway through it. For a current-year estimate, enter the total cash earnings you expect across the earlier and later pay rates.

A full-year comparison answers a different question: what would each salary produce if earned for the entire year? Label your own comparison accordingly.

## Understand the change in deductions

Crossing an income tax bracket applies the higher bracket rate to the income in that bracket. Other income tests can behave differently, so inspect the levy, surcharge, offset and loan rows as well.

This calculator does not assess changes to benefits, childcare costs, commuting expenses or working hours. Those can matter when comparing jobs.
