## Income tax and wage tax answer different questions

Einkommensteuer is assessed on taxable income. Lohnsteuer is tax withheld from employment pay. A Brutto-Netto-Rechner starts from gross salary and also needs payroll details. This English-language tool starts later in the calculation, at taxable income.

## Individual or joint assessment

For eligible joint assessment, the splitting method applies the tariff to half of the combined taxable income, then doubles the tax. Selecting this option does not establish eligibility. Check the official rules for your household.

## What the number leaves out

Solidarity surcharge, church tax, social insurance and tax reductions are not included. Special regimes such as progression on exempt income and preferential investment-income treatment are outside this basic tariff calculation. It cannot tell you the deposit on your payslip.

## Can I enter Bruttogehalt to find Nettogehalt?

No. This tool needs taxable income after applicable deductions. For gross-to-net salary, use a payroll calculator that includes your tax class, insurance and other employment details. The BMF link provides official tax calculation tools.
