Start after deductions

A tax bracket applies to taxable income. Gross wages and adjusted gross income are different starting points. Work out your allowable deductions first; this tool does not decide whether you qualify for a standard, itemized or other deduction.

A refund needs another number

The tax rate schedule does not tell you how much you have already paid. Withholding, estimated payments and credits affect the eventual balance. The IRS withholding estimator is a better starting point for checking a Form W-4.

Why this is not a paycheck calculator

Social Security, Medicare, state and local taxes, benefits and retirement contributions are outside this result. AMT and special income rules are also excluded. Head of household and married filing separately need their own schedules and are not supported by this tool.

Is every dollar taxed at my highest bracket?

No. Each rate applies to the ordinary taxable income in that band. The table shows the amount in each band and its tax. Credits and special tax rules can change your final liability.
