Choose the setting that matches the whole year
This calculator supports appropriate private patient hospital cover for the entire financial year, or no appropriate cover for the entire year. It does not apportion cover by days.
If you started, stopped or suspended cover during the year, neither full-year setting models your situation completely. Check the ATO rules for the actual uncovered period.
Extras cover is not enough
General-treatment or extras-only insurance does not meet the hospital-cover requirement. Check your policy with your insurer rather than assuming any private health insurance qualifies.
The calculator does not assess your policy’s eligibility, premiums, private health insurance rebate or Lifetime Health Cover loading. It is not a recommendation to buy insurance.
The income test matters
For this salary-only profile, the calculator uses the calculated taxable income for the relevant income amounts. Reportable benefits, reportable super contributions and other adjustments can change the income test, so they are excluded.
The surcharge uses income tiers. A change in annual salary can therefore affect the surcharge differently from the marginal income tax bands. Compare the entire annual result when estimating a raise.
Common questions
Does this cover couples or single parents?
No. Families have different thresholds and cover requirements. The current tool supports a single person with no spouse or dependants throughout the year.
